Major John M. Walsh · United States Marine Corps
What people say about Casper.
Miss you buddy...we'll smoke a cigar while flying together again! Fair winds and following seas Casper. — Yuma, AZ ↳ Amy replied later: Thank you from John’s sis!!
Happy Birthday John! Thinking about you all the time. Met a man that lives in my neighborhood recently that knew you from the Marines. His name is Pat Mohr. Such a small world. We exchanged some fun memories we have of you. Miss you. I'm sure you are celebrating with your pop...thinking about you too Larry :) -Laney — Carlsbad, CA
Thinking of you John. — San Marcos, Ca
I loved John. We met in the summer of 1995 when I was on rotation at Camp Pendleton during medical school. He showed me the Cobra and opened his heart to me. I was preparing to go home to get married and came within five minutes of canceling my wedding. To this day, I wonder what would have happened had I done that. John's heart, friendship and passion for life and the Marine Corps were exceptional. He made me feel like royalty for the short time we corresponded. I wish so much I could see him again. The marriage ultimately failed and my daydreams take me to San Diego so often. The world lost an incredible man - perhaps one of the true loves of my life. — Minnesota
Happy Birthday John! Thinking about you on this beautiful day in So-Cal! — Carlsbad, CA ↳ Amy replied later: Laney, You are always so thoughtful to remember John on his birthday here. Thank you. I know it would mean a lot to him. <3 Amy
John you were and will always be a great friend to one of my great friends which says so much about you. I only knew you for a short while but I enjoyed our shared experiences and only wish I could have known you better. Thought of you today and remembered some of your surfing skills which made me smile. You're certainly missed. — San Diego ↳ Larry Walsh replied later: Thanks Dwight for posting. If I remember correctly you were part of the Blue Angels team. It's been 13 years since John's gone. It means a lot for John's sister, Amy, and me to have people remember him. I hope all is going well with you. Larry Walsh ↳ Amy replied later: Dwight, Thank you so much for posting. It means so very much. Hope you are well. Amy (Walsh) Biggert
I felt your presence today and it was good. Your spirit and memories find me often. The one today was as clear as if it had happened just yesterday ... we were on your balcony in Carlsbad enjoying a beer watching the sunset. You had also just been studying about net present of cash-flows in your MBA program and were trying to explain it to me. I had (and still have) no clue what you were talking about, but what remains with me is the excitement in your voice and glow of pride on your face that you had just nailed a pretty tough concept. That was a classic John memory for me ... him just being completely in the moment. Even though I sense that your energy is near me know, I still miss you. — Carlsbad, CA ↳ Laney (Williams) Mesquita replied later: Visiting this website doesn't ever seem to get easier...but like Mike says, the memory of your positive spirit will always bring a smile to my face. Can't believe we are 11 years with out you...loved and missed always. ↳ larry walsh replied later: Just saw this Mike. Thanks for posting. Hope you and Kara and family are good. We are all doing well in PD. Say hi to your family for me. I think of you guys often. ↳ larry walsh replied later: thanks Lani for remembering John. I don't know why but it means a lot to Amy and me. John just had another birthday. He would have been 48. He continues to look good in his pictures. :) Say hi to the family. I love seeing your Christmas pictures. I hope all is well with you. Larry ↳ Amy replied later: Mike and Laney, Thank you so much for loving John, and for always remembering him. You were his 2nd family, and we know how much he loved all of you too.
John, you are missed so much. Thank you for all you did to protect out country. I love you Aunt Karen — commerce twp michigan
Happy Birthday John. We miss you
Happy Birthday Big Brother. Always in my thoughts...miss you.
Ten year anniversary and seems harder today than some others. Not sure why. I guess I am thinking about what I am missing and not what we had. The last few days I am missing our belly laughs - the ones where you have to hold your stomach because you are laughing so hard it hurts. We had the same sense of humor - the kind that sneaks up on you. Lots of people didn't even catch the joke but we always did. And some of the stuff we laughed about went back years and years. And, of course, I miss all the things I hoped for you, your happy marriage and your kids. Grief is a funny thing. Bittersweet is a good word or two. What we had, what we will never have. And ten years is a long time or not.
Remembering you John on your birthday. You sure would have been pretty old today. Miss you my dear friend. — San Diego
Happy Birthday John! We love and miss you...you will always be a part of our lives. — San Diego, CA
Words cannot express the profound sadness I felt when I heard of John's passing so many years ago from a Marine friend, Scotty Roberts. John and I met at an El Toro Airshow where I flew in my North American T-28A on the wing of Scotty's B-model. I was trying to build flight time and used my family's T-28 to go to airshows and flight demos. As the only female flying a "warbird" at the time in So Cal to these types of events, and the fact that I would always throw a pretty fellow Northwest flight attendant friend in the back seat, we became quite a popular attraction at the airshows. At the O CLub Friday night of the show, Scotty introduced me to a group of freshly graduated from flight school Marines, but one stood out in particular, John, of course. He was fascinated with aviation and we had a great many things in common, as I was also striving for a military flight slot and ultimately a commercial pilot job. He was also drop dead gorgeus in his flight suit, but was so sweet and almost shy that you couldn't help but fall for him. In the middle of our conversation out on the patio, John, trying to impress me with his recently aquired knowlege of flying and with a few beers under his belt, leaned back non-chalantly on the railing and fell off the patio! I thought it was the sweetest thing I'd ever seen! He was trying so hard to be impressive and all his sqadron mates riled him about it, but it just endeared him to me more. John and I kept in contact over the years via letters and an occasional phone call. We had lost touch in the last couple years, but I would always get an update from Scotty who had kept in contact with him, and would send my warmest regards. Then came the fateful call from Scotty, a retired AA Captain and USMC Cobra pilot himself, that "cutey boy Johnny Walsh, as we called him, was gone. My heart was broken to say the least. Please accept my deepest sympathies for your family and the friends of John. His airshow family misses him as well, and we will forever cherish the memories of our Johnny Walsh. — Arcadia, Ca ↳ Amy (Walsh) Biggert replied later: Jerry, I just cannot express how much I enjoy hearing people's stories about John. It warms my heart, and always fills me with pride to know that people thought so highly of him. He was my brother, and I always looked up to him. It is so nice to hear what he meant to you. Thank you for remembering him, and for being a part of his life too. Amy
Larry Our language has no term for the parent of a child who has passed away. This is because having one's child predecease you is too horrible to contemplate. Casper is still in my thoughts and prayers as are you. Thank you for your difficult sacrifice on our behalf. John
Remembering you on what would have been your birthday. You are thought of every day, and will be missed forever! I love you John. ↳ LtCol Mike"Rudy" Lakin replied later: John and I flew in HMLA-367. I was thinking of him today as I saw a movie where a crew member had our old "Scarface" Patch. He flew with me once in my personal airplane, and we shared many roundw of beer. He loved life and lived it without looking back. I have many friends who "checked out early", but my Marine friends were the best. See ya later John...from Iraq...Rudy
John was a wonderful young man. Thanks to John and all the other soldiers, we have been able to maintain our freedom. I love John's favorite quote (from his grandfathers bible). I am printing it out and hanging it on the refrigerator. John, you are always in my prayers! — Farmington Hills, MI
John you are loved so much and greatly missed. Thank you for what you have done to keep us safe. Aunt Karen — Commerce Twp, Mi
Went to Southfield Christian with John. From the moment I met John, I knew of his dream to be a pilot. I always knew he'd live his dream. My favorite line from the movie "Steel Magnolias" is when Julia Roberts said "I'd rather have 5 minutes of something wonderful than a lifetime of nothing special". John had his time of wonderful & I'm sure to him it was a lifetime worth & he'd do it all again - even if to us it seems like "5 minutes" in comparison. His time here was too brief..but it was something wonderful. — Michigan now Florida
I graduated with John from Southfield Christian. I will always remember John smiling and drawing planes on his notebook during classes. Many people live a long life and never get the chance to do what they really love, I am thrilled that John's dreams were fulfilled and so very thankful for his service to this country!! We miss you and will never forget!! — Michigan
grateful for men like John — michigan
John, Remembering you today and can't believe that it has been 7 years. We miss you, Love Jim, Suzanne, Elliot and Oliver — San Marcos, Ca
John, You gave your life to protect us. Thank you, we miss you very much Aunt karen — Commerce Twp
You will never be forgotten. Thank you for everything. — San Diego, CA
I just found this beautiful page "Remembering Casper", when searching the web for something totally different! I am a danish pilot, and the page really touched me. This is the first time I ever signed a guestbook, but I am truelly sorry for your loss. When I looked on the page I remembered a pilot poem, maybe you already know it, I think it is quite beautiful..., anyway I think it say´s a lot. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Flight is freedom in its purest form, To dance with the clouds which follow a storm; To roll and glide, to wheel and spin, To feel the joy that swells within; To leave the earth with its troubles and fly, And know the warmth of a clear spring sky; Then back to earth at the end of a day, Released from the tensions which melted away. Should my end come while I am in flight, Whether brightest day or darkest night; Spare me your pity and shrug off the pain, Secure in the knowledge that I'd do it again; For each of us is created to die, And within me I know, I was born to fly. Take care, and look out for each other. Wish you all the best.... - Kenth — Denmark
John was my cousin and a great man. We are all so proud of his accomplishments and thankfull for his sacrafice for our freedom. John will be missed. — Michigan, (now Delaware)
I am so thankful to have reconnected with Amy and that she shared this tribute to John with me. What I remember most about John was a great older brother he was - he was so tolerant! Whenever I would come over to see Amy, he put up with our silliness, didn't get upset when we would barge in his room AND he let us take his hamster out and play with it! Not many brothers would do that! He is greatly missed. — Ann Arbor, MI
Thank you for sharing, what a great tribute to John. I know John as Amy's older brother who I didn't know well, but remember as laid back, gentle and kind. I always loved being around your family. I am so sorry that you did not have more time on earth with John, he was truly special. — Michigan...now Cincinnati
J.W. I'll never forget your kindness. You are probably to this day one of the nicest guys I ever knew. School was always a plus because you were there. Thanks for your service to our country and thank you for being a friend to many including me. I am still shocked that you are gone. It doesn't seem possible. I know you're with you mom and maybe you've even seen my sister. it really is those of us left behind that suffer. we miss you! J.W. — Michigan. now in Chicago
I was a classmate of Amy Walsh at SCS from 4th-12th grade. I ran Cross Country and Track and remember looking up to John who was on Varsity above us. We all looked up to John not just because he was a great runner but also because he was kind, he actually talked to us like we weren't scrubby little sevies (which in all honesty we were). I remember his Dad who never missed a meet, cheering with pride from the sidelines, rain or shine. I remember what a good brother he was to Amy, how well he took care of her, and how she loved him. To those of us on Cross Country in Amy's class he was the older brother we all wished we had. I only just recently reconnected with Amy and found that we had lived in the same town. I moved to San Diego right after college (92') and since San Diego is a military town I totally remember hearing about that accident, I had no clue at the time that it involved John. Its good to hear that John died doing what he loved best and that he was faithfully serving his country to God's glory. Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful site with me. In His grip, Eug — San Diego, Ca and Southfield, Mi
Dear John... Since you left us, Jim and I have visited you a number of times at Rosecrans, but especially on Memorial Day weekend. We missed this year, but we know you understand. You were so much a part of our family...we always thought of you as our "fourth son" and to Laney, Chris, Mike and especially Grant you were a brother. You would have been our son Grant's Best Man last April, 2007 (something you and he arranged years ago, to stand up for one another at your weddings). Your Dad stood in your place as Best Man and gave the most beautiful speech and toast to the friendship and brotherhood that you and Grant shared (there was not a dry eye in the room). We will be a little delayed in coming this year because Grant and Lisa gave birth to a beautiful little girl, Emily Michelle on Saturday. We know you are watching over all of us...we love and miss you. We are so very proud of what you gave and did for your Corps and country, but most importantly we feel so very blessed that you were a part of our lives...you will always remain in our hearts and memory! With love, The Williams Family — Oceanside, CA
We are so proud of all that you did. You were certainly a wonderful person, who none of us will ever forget. I love you and miss you. Aunt Kare — Michigan
I first met John when we were juniors at Central Michigan University. As chance would have it, he was a fraternity brother of roommate of mine, and we found out talking one night we had both applied to the USMC Platoon Leaders Course. We attended our Junior and Senior PLC courses together, as well as The Basic School (we traveled together to Quantico in John's Pontiac Sunbird). Had my eyesight not given out, negating my flight contract, I suspect we would have attended flight school together as well. We lost touch after TBS, but I would run into John from time to time when we were both stationed in California. I bumped into him in the late 90s at Street Scene in downtown San Diego, around the time he had decided to leave active duty and pursue his Masters at USD. It was the last time I saw him. It wasn't until 2005, when I mentioned his name to another officer and he informed me of the terrible news. I just couldn't believe it. Even though I hadn't seen him in several years and our careers had taken us in different paths, I felt connected to him due to our early college and first training days. My thoughts and prayers are with your family. I believe I have old pictures of OCS and TBS days. If you’d like them, please let me know. I’d be glad to scan and send along if you don’t have many from those times. Respectfully, John Madsen Maj USMC — Oceanside CA and West Branch Michigan
I have never met you, and only chatted with your dad...somehow I know you are up there still flying, looking over all of us. — Franklin, TN
John, We are thinking of you today. We can't believe it has been five years and recount our memories of you as if it was yesterday. We still all miss you so much, Love Jim, Suzanne, Elliot and Oliver Mumma — San Marcos, CA
It's been a while since I visited, so thanks to BCH for posting the link again. Larry, your pride and love just leap off the web pages. I wish I could have met John, but having met you I know without a doubt you raised a good man. — Carol Stream, IL
HAPPY BIRTHDAY BROTHER!! WE MISS YOU SO MUCH, AND THINK OF YOU OFTEN. — CALIFORNIA USA
I didn't know John Walsh but wish I had. I thank Col. Williams, my cousin, for referring me here; and his son for putting such a fitting tribute together for a great man. God bless you all. Tom Laney — Colfax, WI
The only thing more impressive than the website it the subject. You must be so proud. Even after such a tragedy, you have to know that he made a significant contribution to the world. — Manistee, MI
Dear John, another Memorial Day and all of us think about you often. We love you and are so proud of you and what you accomplished. You were taken from us too soon. Love Aunt Karen
Very nice! Thanks!
Hi. Very nice site. Thank you.
I miss you John! You would have turned 41 on Thursday, and soon I will surpass you in years. That is so hard to believe. You died too young. We were by your condo today and enjoyed time with the Mumma's. You are never far from our thoughts. I know they miss you too.
John it was your birthday this week, and I missed you so.
John, though I think of you often you were on my mind even more this last weekend. I attended a reunion with Marines that I served with in Moscow in 1982, many of which were Purple Heart recipients. Freedom is not free and many have paid dearly for all that we enjoy here in America. Thank god for men like you who have done their duty without question. We miss you today and will for as long as we live to enjoy what you have bought for us.
John, Memorial Day is a day for remembering those who have served and died for our country. You will always be remembered for the way you served and the sacrifice you made for our great country. It was with great pride I stood in church yesterday to honor your memory. I love you and miss you! Your cousin, Laurie — Elgin, IL
Dear John, it is Memorial Day weekend and it is a time to reflect on the service men who have died. I don't need a day to remember you. I miss you very much and think of you often. You died doing what you loved. There is so much conversation about illegals coming into our country and that was what you were doing protecting out borders. I love you. Aunt Karen — Farmington, Mi
Several articles have appeared in the paper here recently. I thought I would post their websites for those interested. It is nice to know that John is still not forgotten. http://www.thedesertsun.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060329/NEWS04/603290321/1006 http://www.thedesertsun.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060422/NEWS01/604220325
John, Three years ago today will forever be emblazened into my memory. I was watching "The Today Show", while getting ready for work, when I heard some news about a Cobra crash in Laredo, Texas the night before. It could not be John, but wasn't he in Laredo? For hours we held out hope of the possibility that it wasn't you. I cannot count the calls made to your cell phone, or your home answering machine. Why I called your house I don't know. You were in Texas, we knew that. But maybe you weren't! Somehow it was comforting to listen to your voice on the machine. I still have the phone, and can listen to it whenever we need to. We soon realized that it was you and three of your friends who died that night. And life for our family would never be the same! No one will ever be able to fill the void left by your absence. You were the best brother anyone could ask for. And while I don't expect you to call me now at 7:30, or to be at your nephew's birthday parties, you are missed as much as ever. You will never be forgotten! Thank you for giving me so many happy memories. I love you and always will! Love, "your little sister" — Palm Desert, CA
John, it is Veteran's Day, 2005. You have not been forgotten, nor never will be. Thanks to your friend, Todd Stabley, you have a wonderful website that continues to be visited. Over 7,100 times now. We continue to miss you. Your nephews know about you and Ethan talks about you. I am going to be with some of your friends this weekend. Also, we are all going to the group at Warner Springs. You left your mark in a lot of places. — Palm Springs, CA
I come back from time to time to this website...just to say hello and remember John. He was one of my best friends in the USD MBA program (having met him on the very first day, very first class), and I enjoyed our time together the most. I recently flew into San Diego on a business trip, and as I was leaving the car rental lot, I looked up and a squardron of 5 Cobra's just happen to be flying overhead. I was quite sure it was John's way of saying, "welcome back to SD, my friend." And, as my favourite movie quote would say, "most of all, I just miss my friend." — San Diego and San Francisco
Larry, God puts us all in every place for His own reasons, and I thank God for you outside the coffee shop the morning of August 11, 2005. You have been in my heart constantly, and I know that I will never forget you. God Bless you, and may you always feel the "angel" on your shoulder. Thank you for being my friend. I am honored to know John, through you, and I look forward to knowing both of you better. — South Lyon, Michigan
Thank you Larry and Amy. This is a beautiful website. John was one of my closest friends and he is missed dearly. I drive through Pendleton every week and each time fondly remember him. We should all live life so fully. He loved you all more than anything. Don’t let Ethan and Griffin forget; he adored them and was so thrilled to be their uncle. And Larry – be sure to go to Starbucks and get a blueberry muffin. — La Jolla
The last time I saw John, he was having coffee by himself, reading a paper, early in the morning, seeming so content and just enjoying being. Our family sat down at the table next to him and he joined us for breakfast. He was the same person, content, peaceful, as he calmly answered questions from my mom, and she can ask a lot of questions. Then he listened to my mom tell about our family. He was genuinely interested and asked questions about our family. We had a great talk and although I didn't know him well, after that breakfast, I felt like I knew him and the kind of person he was. Larry, you confirmed that as I learned more about him through you. John was truly a "there you are" person. — Redondo Beach, CA
I didn't know john as I was a senior and he was a freshman at SCS. I do remember him from the halls and sporting events at SCS. I'm sure everyone knows he died doing what he loved. Serving this country is something to be proud of. — Beverly Hills, MI
Thanks to Amy the students at Cielo Vista had the opportunity to see a cobra, and meet John. This will be a memory that neither the students or I will ever forget! — Cathedral City
Honored to know of warrior/patriots like John who serve and give their all for freedom's cause. Was just web cruising, and was moved to see a fallen knight of our round table eulogized by those who knew him best. — Phenix City, AL (Department of the Army Civilian at Ft. Benning)
What a lovely young man John was. Thank you for the opportunity to glimpse his short but wonderful life. — Australia
Dear Mr. Walsh, Thank you for this beautiful website. I have not been able to clear the lump from my throat the entire time I have been reading. John was a year ahead of me in school but I remember him as being very kind and always giving a smile when you passed him in the hall. God Bless you and your family. Love, Karen — Rochester Hills, Michigan
John's Dad,Larry, is my 1st cousin. The only time I met John was on a visit to Spalding, when he and his Dad were on their way to Colorado Springs, to visit the Airforce Academy. John was in high School at that time. Sorry I was never able to know him in later years. A very good reason for more family reunions. This is a wonderful way to get to know my cousin. — Spalding, NE
Larry, The website you have put together is beautiful. What a wonderful tribute to John. He remains in Jim's and my heart as a "fourth" son and a "brother" to our children. We will always miss him, but feel so blessed to have known him. He will live forever through the wonderful memories we have. With Love, Cindy — Oceanside, CA
John, I hadn't seen you since TBS, and now it looks like it's going to a bit longer now. I still have fond memories of our time at "the suck" and now we'll have to relive them at a later date. I know you're in good hands, and in good company although you're time with us was way too short. I know where you are is a much better place now that you're on board. You'll always be remembered. Semper Fi my brother, ...Steve — Phoenix, AZ.
Casper, You were one of my mentors. One of my IP's in the AH-1W FRS. A stud. A great pilot. A great guy. A great Marine. You helped me in my transition out of the Corps. Your lasting impression on me was that you lived in the moment. You would jump at the chance to try something new, and loved it for the experience, without the hesitation of what you'd look like trying. How many times have we looked back on stuff and wish we'd just tried? You're never far away in my thoughts, and find myself often laughing at times we shared, or things you'd say. I know you're smiling with me now too. Your friend, your brother... — San Diego, CA

John sounds like such a wonderful man. I'm sorry that I never got to meet him.
This is truly a beautiful way to remember John by. I had the pleasure of knowing him for only a short while but he was always happy to see me and made sure to give me a hug. I was always delighted to see him and had such a positive feeling from him. He is sorely missed by many in his community here on the coast. He was a standup guy - someone you'd want your sister or daughter to marry. He was never boastful and obviously had good values. There aren't a lot of men out there like that. You will always be missed John. — Encinitas, CA
I never met John, but taught with Amy, his sister. I know him by knowing Amy. John must have been one of the kindest, most loving, most caring people one would have the gift of meeting. I know the loss of him is a loss for our planet. We need people like him and his sister in our world. — La Quinta
It is unfortunate that I never had the opportunity to meet John. He was obviously an amazing individual that touched many people's lives.
